Installation Process and Issues

How do I install the software?
- Go to: Downloads (See top toolbar))
- Then: Downloads and Version History
- Download the appropriate version of GPS-Photo Link

 Which version should I install?

NOTICE :There are three versions: Version 4.2x, Version 4.1x, and Version 4.0x and earlier. The ONLY difference between the 4.1 and 4.0 versions is the system used to unlock the software. There are no differences in core functionality or bug fixes.

If you are a 4.0x or earlier user, DO NOT DOWNLOAD 4.1x as an upgrade! If you do, your unlock code will not work!

The 4.2x version of the software is only for new users or those who have purchased an upgrade. If you are a new user, install the 4.2 or Trial version. When you purchase the software we will send you an unlock code that will open the full functionality of the trial version.

4.0x version

Upgrade 4.0 Version of GPS-Photo Link (Upgrade for current 4.0x or earlier users only) The 4.0 version uses the previous unlocking system where a users must contact GeoSpatial Experts to get an unlock code specific to the computer where the software is installed. Users with this version can download upgrades to 4.0 and earlier editions and run them without needing a new unlock code.

If a current customer with the 4.0 or earlier version would like to change to the 4.1 edition you may purchase a 1 or 2 year maintance agreement. That will allow you to receive free upgrades (including a new 16 digit serial number for the new 4.1 version) as well as technical assistance. Customers that prefer to keep the 4.0 version may do so. The 4.0 version will be supported at least one more year. Notice will be given on our web site before support for this version is discontinued. For new users who need 4.0 version, download this.

4.1x Version

Trial 4.1 Version of GPS-Photo Link (This is not an upgrade for 4.0x customers!)

The 4.1 version incorporates a server based system that allowing users to unlock the software themselves using a 16 digit serial number provided at the time of purchase. When users enter this number during registration, the computer calls a server which uses the serial number to unlock the software. This new system allows users to check licenses in and out among different computers making network licenses possible.

How do I know which version I have installed?

To find out what version you have simply open GPS-Photo Link and click on the “About” button. The version will be listed on the window that pops up. You may need to turn off your popup blocker to see this window.

Registration

Registration procedure varies by the version of software you have. Visit our online help for specific instructions. http://www.geospatialexperts.com/help/register.html

When I try to register it says all of my activations have been used. (4.1x & 4.2x versions)

GPS-Photo Link is designed to run on one computer at a time. When you register the software, our server records that your serial number is "checked out". Before you can use it on another computer you must check it back in by using the transfer process described below. If you encounter this error it is likely that your license was already registered (checked out) to another computer. If that is not the case or if the originally licensed computer is no longer available, please contact our office so that we can reset your serial number.

Transfer A License to Another Computer

How to transfer license 4.1x & 4.2x

You can easily transfer the license to another computer without contacting GeoSpatial Experts. Begin by downloading
the software to the new computer. In most cases, each license is only able to run on one computer at a time.

To Transfer the license automatically you must have internet access. Click “Transfer License” on the original computer. That will “un-register’ the software on your computer freeing up the serial number to be entered on another computer. Next, type the serial number into the new computer where prompted. NOTE: You may not transfer a license away from and then back to the same computer on the same day. If you do you will see the error: The Activation code you input has already been used once. It can not be used again. Please contact your vendor.

If you get this error, you can wait a day and it should work again. If you continue to get this error contact our office. We can reset your password.

How to transfer license 4.0x

You can easily transfer the license to another computer, without contacting GeoSpatial Experts. Begin by downloading the software to the new PC. When you run it, the screen will say that you have an evaluation copy and give you a serial number. Write this number down. On the original PC, when you bring up GPS-Photo Link you will see an "About" button at the bottom. Click this. When you do it will show a registration button. Click there and you will see one of the options on the left as “Transfer to another PC”. You will enter the serial number from the other PC in the space provided. When you hit the transfer button it will generate a new unlock code for the new PC. WRITE THIS DOWN before selecting OK!! Otherwise it will go away and never be seen again. Finally, type the new unlock code into the new PC where prompted and you are off. The first PC will be locked and the second PC will be unlocked.

You may not transfer a license away from and then back to the same computer on the same day. If you do you will see this error. Errors that happen when I try to run GPS-Photo Link

ERROR: Unknown return_code: False_MLF_ACCESS_DENIED. Please contact vendor. Shutting down.

This error indicates relates to a specific file on your computer’s hard drive. GPS-Photo Link needs you to be able to read and write to folder where this file is saved. This file will be created the first time you run the software. On some systems, only administrators have that right. To fix this problem make sure you have read/write privileges to this folder. You will most likely need to have your network administrator make this change. If you are logged in as the administrator and still get this message contact our office at help@GeoSpatialExperts.com or 303-255-2908.

Follow this path to find the file in question: gplextra.lib

C:/Documents and Settings/All Users/Shared Documents/gplextra.lib On some computers “All users” is called “Users”. On some computers “Shared documents” may be called “Documents”

On some computers gplextra.lib is a “hidden file” so you may need to reveal it by clicking on the Tools window select Folder Options. Next, on the tabs select View. Then you will see several options in a list below. Look under the folder in the list that says “Hidden files” and click the “Show hidden files or folders” button.

If after unhiding the file you can not see it, that means that either you are not the administrator or you have not yet run GPS-Photo Link.

ERROR: YOU SHOULD NEVER SEE THIS ERROR…

This error means there is something wrong with the copy of version of software you have. Begin by uninstalling GPS-Photo Link in the following way:

  • Make a backup copy of photos and track logs or processed photos you have.
  • Go to your C: drive and completely delete the GPS-Photo Link folder.
  • Delete the gplextra.lib file under C:/Documents and Settings/All Users/Shared Documents/gplextra.lib
  • Go to our web site and install the latest version of the software. If you have difficultly registering the software contact our office.

Notes regarding gplextra.lib On some computers “All users” is called “Users”.

ERRORS relating to Google Earth:

When I click on the thumbnail, the photos do not show up:

The current GoogleEarth beta (as of 11-1-08) does not allow for internal links. Until this is fixed by Google, you will need to uninstall the beta and reinstall the previous version. Here is the link: http://www.filehippo.com/download_google_earth/4092/

If the problem persists, see the solution below under "Links not working".

Only some photos showing:

In Google Earth, only some icons are showing, a max of 10 show up, sometimes only 3 out of 50 points? All files/locations are however listed down the side of the screen allowing you to click on these and then zoom to the photo location. This is a “feature” in Google Earth, to only show a time slice (slider at the top of the screen).

It really should be turned off, then you can see all of the icons. To turn it off, go to the menu “View”, then “Show Time”, select “Never”

Links not working

The links on thumbnails displayed in Google Earth won't link to original or watermarked photo.

In the Output Options screen, under the Google tab, make sure “Link to Watermarked” and “Link to Original” picture are selected. Also, the original picture (*.JPG), and watermarked photo (*_tag.JPG), need to be in the same directory as the picture.kml file.
